The varicella-zoster virus is a member of the herpes virus family. This virus causes chickenpox, generally in children aged 2 to 10 years. Symptoms, fever, erythema (red skin), and typical eruptions develop after a 15-day incubation period. The skin is spotted with small vesicles filled with water that break open and form a crust which falls off in a week. Local antiseptics are given. Antibiotics may be prescribed in case of bacterial superinfection. A subject who had chickenpox during childhood harbors the virus in the spinal nerve nodes. During periods of stress or fatigue, the virus may become reactivated, leading to herpes zoster (zona).
