The city of Venice, capital of the Veneto region of Italy, is made up of many small islands, which lie in the Venetian Lagoon at the northern end of the Adriatic Sea. Venice and its lagoon were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. St Mark's Basilica, the city's cathedral and finest religious building, dates back to the 11th century and displays a variety of architectural styles, ranging from Byzantine and Romanesque to Gothic and Renaissance. The doors in the building's west facade feature Romanesque carvings and some fine mosaics.
