In the very heart of Skipton, the Springs Branch leaves the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. It runs for half a mile from the main canal around the back of the castle to a former stone loading wharf. The branch opened in 1797 and was built for Lord Thanet, who lived in Skipton Castle and owned the limestone quarries served by the branch. Preparing for the arrival of The Tour de France, a large yellow jersey has been attached to the tower of Holy Trinity Church which can be seen in the background.
