Vintage portrait photo circa 1891 of World Champion cyclist William Walker Martin on a penny-farthing bicycle. Martin (c1860 - 1942) was born in Dublin but moved to the USA with his family at the age of three and took up cycling in the 1880s. He turned professional in 1890 and in 1891 won a six-day race at Madison Square Garden in New York which was billed as the long-distance championship of the world. He went on to compete in and win races in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the USA before retiring in 1903. Martin acquired a number of nicknames during his career, including the "Castiron Man", but was best known as "Plugger" or "Plugger Bill" because of his steady and grinding racing style. He was also known for his fiery personality. Photo by Eisenmann of New York.
