Here the big clean up is happening on 'The Level', an urban park in central Brighton. Fallen trees that litter the area have been tidied up by chain-saw – much of the good timber would later be recycled. 'The Great Storm' of 1987 was a violent tropical cyclone, with hurricane-force winds causing casualties and great damage in the UK, France and the Channel Islands when a severe depression in the Bay of Biscay moved northeast. Forests, parks, roads and railways were strewn with fallen trees. Power lines came down causing extensive electricity blackouts. Many buildings were damaged. At least 22 people were killed in England and France. As a result of this storm, major improvements were made in atmospheric observation and computer modelling. This image is from an old amateur Agfachrome colour transparency taken in poor, late-afternoon light conditions. It will look grainy and soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1980s photograph.
