The novelist and poet Thomas Hardy studied architecture in London from 1862-67. During the 1860's the Midland Railway was being built over part of the original St Pancras Churchyard and Hardy was involved, as a student, in helping to oversee the removal of bodies and headstones from the land on which the railway was being built. The stones were placed here around that time.
