There still remain to be visited the buildingseast of the Plaza de Panama, along the Prado.Architecturally they all more or less forget them-selves and indulge in a veritable carnival ofBaroque ornamentation, such as the wildestperiods of Europe seldom beheld. The influ-ence of the noble Cathedral is waning, themantle of restraint is thrown away, and riotousjoy prevails. This is of course all in the style, but it shows the difference between the workdone by a man whose hobby, so to speak, hasbeen so individual a style as Spanish Baroque [52]. THE TOWERS OF THE FOOD PRODUCTS BUILDING ON THECALLE CRISTOBAL THE BUILDINGS as demonstrated in the California Building, andthe work here done by men who had to livethemselves quickly into a style which at bestnobody can completely master in its mostmannered way. It is the expression of themost decadent side of Baroque that jumps atus here from all corners. Overly heavy, drop-sical mouldings conveying the idea of enormousphysical weight, ornamental convulsions of allkinds, loud and spectacular in effect, are inevidence in more than one place. But we mustnot forget this is an Exposition and that this isnot the part intended for posterity.
