Thiksey monastery looks out over the Indus Valley at the snow-capped Himalayas. This Buddhist Gompa is one of the largest in the area and is very famous, although nearly empty in the winter months. Located along the Manali highway east of Leh, surrounded by the Himalayan mountains. The northern Indian province of Ladakh has a very large population of Buddhists, including one of the largest remaining tantric buddhist societies. The architecture of Thiksey and the surrounding monasteries is Tibetan in nature. Buddhism is less a religion and more a way of life that practices non-violence to all sentient beings, and works to cultivate enlightenment through peace and meditation.
