Construction workers relaying the cable car tracks in Powell Street, San Francisco, California, USA in 1980 – in this view looking northwards uphill from south of Union Square. The Powell Street cable car lines were originally built by the Ferries & Cliff House Railway Company, which started construction in 1887 after winning several franchises for cable car operation. This company elected to mark its Powell Street cable cars with the name ‘Powell Street Railway Co’. The original Powell Line ran from Powell and Market past Union Square to Bay & Taylor. This image is from an old amateur Kodak colour transparency. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1980s photograph.
