A Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) ventures out in the forests of the Yorkshire Dales, UK on 21st May 2020. In Great Britain, numbers have decreased drastically in recent years. This decline is associated with the introduction by humans of the Eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). It is believed that around 85% of the UK’s red squirrel population live in Scotland. Elsewhere, they have been seen to live in coniferous, pine woods. During May and June they will shed their winter coat for a much thinner fur which is usually more red in colour.
