A Mameluke standard, Egypt, circa 1500 Forged iron blade with several narrow grooves, at the base of the blade on both sides a medallion (partially rubbed) with gold-inlaid "Sülüs" inscription. Octagonal socket divided by a moulding. Length 68 cm. Extremely rare standard, which has been captured by Sultan Selim I in 1517 from the Mamelukes. Cf.
