More information:

A Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis) lets out a call in the late-afternoon sun in the Timber Lakes area near Heber City, Wasatch County, Utah, USA. These striking birds breed and forage in open prairies, grasslands and wetlands. This particular bird is mostly a reddish brown because of "staining". The adults start out gray in color but due to preening their feathers with mud on their bills which contains an iron solution, their feathers turn the reddish brown you see here. The mud on their bills comes from foraging for food.
