More information:

View NNW of the C14th chapel dedicated to St Cuthbert on Inner Farne island off the coast of Northumberland, England, UK. Cuthbert was prior of Lindisfarne but he retired to live on the island as a hermit 676-84. After two years as Bishop of Lindisfarne he returned here to die on 20 March 687. The chapel of 1370 (restored 1840) formed part of the House of Farne, a small Benedictine priory established in 1255 by the monks of Durham. Prior Castell's Tower (rear L) was built in 1500, reputedly on the site of Cuthbert's cell. From 1673 a beacon fire of coal & timber was lit each night on top of the tower to act as a lighthouse. The island's Trinity House 'high light' lighthouse was built in 1809 & automated in 1912. St Aidan of Lindisfarne used to spend Lent on Inner Farne, it was from here in 651 that he saw the royal seat of Bamburgh burning and successfully prayed to turn the wind on the attackers. Inner Farne is owned by the National Trust, it is a National Nature Reserve & designated Heritage Coast in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty & a Sea-bird Sanctuary, notably for nesting arctic terns.
