Antigua is a small city surrounded by volcanoes in southern Guatemala. It’s renowned for its Spanish colonial buildings, many of them restored following a 1773 earthquake that ended Antigua’s 200-year reign as Guatemala’s colonial capital. Notable architectural examples include baroque La Merced church. It’s an integral part of the city’s famous Semana Santa, a holy week with parades and rituals. Volcán de Agua is a stratovolcano located in the departments of Sacatepéquez and Escuintla in Guatemala. At 3, 760 m (12, 340 ft), Agua Volcano towers more than 3, 500 m (11, 500 ft) above the Pacific coastal plain to the south and 2, 000 m (6, 600 ft) above the Guatemalan Highlands to the north.
