The Red Fort was the palace for Shah Jahan's new capital, Shahjahanabad, the seventh Muslim city that was built in the area now occupied by the Delhi. Shah Jahan moved his capital from Agra in an attempt to provide more prestige to his kingdom and to get a place in which to develop his ambitious building schemes. The Red Fort was begun in 1638 and was not completed until ten years later. It's located on the eastern edge of Shahjahanabad, and gets its name from the impressive walls built in red sandstone that defines its four sides. The wall measures 6.5 kilometers long and the height varies from 16 meters on the riverside to 33 meters in the area near the city.
