Willingham Community Orchard Cambridgeshire, UK. 28th Jan, 2024. People enjoy the ancient custom of wassailing in the community orchard. The wassailing, or blessing of the fruit trees, involves drinking cider, reciting a poem, crowning an Orchard King and Queen, banging drums and saucepan lids and anointing the tees with bread to scare away bad spirits and encourage the the health of the trees in the hope that they will provide a bountiful harvest in the autumn.
