Whenever a Soviet-made Ilyushin Il-76 was due to take-off or land at Sarajevo Airport, two fire trucks were always in attendance. During the Bosnian War 1992-1995, the UN supplied the city with constant daily airlifts. Occasionally, Serb shelling and gunfire meant the airport would shut down for a few days. The Siege of Sarajevo was the longest of a capital city in the history of modern warfare lasting from 5th April 1992 to 29th February 1996 (1425 days).
