The historic Appleby Horse Fair has existed since 1685 under the protection of a charter granted by King James II. Starting the first Thursday in June and running for a week the fair is visited by Romany Gypsies, Horse Dealers and Travellers from across Europe.

In 1649 he signed the death warrant of King Charles I and was later hung, drawn and quartered for his murder.
