The Rock of Cashel rising above the Irish countryside in Cashel, County Tipperary. The rocky fortress was a symbol of power and royalty beginning in the 4th or 5th century when it was the seat of the Kings of Munster who ruled much of sourthern Ireland. It was also a religious center until a siege at the hands of Cromwell in 1647 resulted in its inhabitants being killed. The portions rising above the wall in the scene are the O'Scully Mounument, at left, and the Round Tower.
