During the Bosnian War 1992-1995, the United Nations primarily supplied the besieged city with constant daily airlifts. Occasionally, Serb shelling and gunfire meant the airport would be shut down for a few days. The Siege of Sarajevo was the longest of a capital city in the history of modern warfare lasting from 5th April 1992 to 29th February 1996 (1, 425 days).
